Brief: Angola prison puts on a play about Jesus

ANGOLA, La. (AP) – Lawrence Jenkins, a convicted killer serving a life sentence for murder, directed a play about Jesus Christ at Louisiana State Penitentiary.

Assistant Warden Cathy Fontenot said that both male inmates at Angola as well as female inmates from the Louisiana Correctional Institute for Women in St. Gabriel, auditioned for roles in the play.

In the play, “The Life of Jesus Christ,” Mary Magdalene is caught committing adultery and is publicly humiliated and threatened with execution.

Suzanne Lofthus, artistic director of Cutting Edge Theatre Productions of Edinburgh, has directed more than a dozen productions of the play and has led 3 productions at Angola.

Lofthus said that the inmates did not just act and direct the play. They worked behind the scenes built sets, made costumes and worked with the sound, lights and music.

The three-hour production was performed at Angola’s Multi-Purpose Arena on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 16-17.
