The women’s basketball team’s Gulf Coast Athletic Conference winning streak ended at seven at the hands of LSU-Shreveport on Saturday in the Den. The standing record was a four-game GCAC winning streak set last year by practically the same roster.
Wednesday night the Wolfpack fell to Xavier 77-67 in the Barn, bringing the Gold Rush’s record of consecutive games won at home to 35. Xavier’s women, ranked 16th in the NAIA and No. 1 in conference, have only lost four games this season.
Co-captain and point-guard Joelle Bordelon, sociology senior, said she looks at the losses as a humbling experience.
“We can’t get complacent like other teams,” she said.
Bordelon, who had nine points and 10 assists in the game against Xavier, said it was hard to pinpoint what went wrong in the game.
“It was a very physical game,” she said. “They hit their shots, and we didn’t hit some of the shots we wanted.”
Wednesday’s defeat was only the third the ‘Pack has suffered in its past 13 games. Loyola’s record fell to 19-13 and 10-7 in GCAC play. As of press time, Loyola was in contention for third place in the GCAC.
The ‘Pack also lost Saturday at home to LSU-Shreveport 68-59.
LSU-Shreveport turned an early two-point lead into a solid 33-15 lead thanks to a 19-3 run. The lead grew to 20 points at halftime after a Saige Cooper three beat the buzzer.
Loyola was never able to recover. The closest the team was able to get was nine points in the second half.
Three members of the ‘Pack scored in double digits led by Kiely Schork, general studies sophomore, with 14 points on 5-of-25 shooting. Joelle Bordelon, sociology senior, who leads the GCAC in assists per game, added 13 points and seven assists. Dani Holland, criminal justice sophomore, recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 11 points and 13 boards.
The news was much better for the ‘Pack last Thursday. They beat Dillard 72-65 behind several strong outings. Marjorie Bilinksi, finance sophomore, and Christine Mainguy, general studies freshman, each achieved double-doubles. Bilinski led the team with 18 points and collected 10 boards. Mainguy scored 16 points and claimed a team-high 11 rebounds. Dani Holland came up one rebound short of a double-double. She scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
Tomorrow, the ‘Pack travels to Mississippi to play Tougaloo College in its final regular season game.
