Column: Netflix inspires columnist’s “Insty” awards

Since the only Golden Globe winner I saw this year was “Toy Story 3,” I decided to create my own award series based on the what’s available on Netflix Instant Play.

The nominees were decided by an elite group of critics and the winners were decided by a grueling scientific process involving the 5-star user rating system on the Netflix website.

Without further adieu, I give you the first annual Insty Awards!

Our first award is the Best Comedy Award, and the Nominees are: “Zombieland,” “Men Who Stare at Goats,” “The Invention of Lying,” “Annie Hall” and “Drop Dead Fred.”

With an average rating of 4 out of 5 stars, the Insty goes to “Zombieland!” Congratulations, “Zombieland.” I am sad that a zomedy beat out Woody Allen.

Have you ever seen something truly horrendous, like a car crash or a leper colony, that you couldn’t look away from due to some kind of sadistic inner force? Well, the Goats Award is devoted to entire films of that nature, and the nominees are: “The Human Centipede,” “G-force,” “Gigli,” “Hood of the Living Dead” and anything starring Chuck Norris. The award, by a tenth of a star, goes to “Gigli,” starring J. Lo and Ben Affleck.

With an average rating of 1.9 stars, “Gigli” is one of the lowest rated movies available on Netflix.

This award, a variation of the Goats Award, is for films that are so terrible that they’re fun to watch. The nominees for this year’s So Bad It’s Good Award include: “The Antichrist,” “Sex Galaxy,” “The Toxic Avenger” movie series, “Battlefield Earth” and “Spice World.”

The Insty goes to “The Toxic Avenger” series. Movies I-IV are available on Instant Play and are equal in their hilarious terribleness.

The next award is the Movies That I’d Never Heard of Until Netflix Award, and the nominees include: “The Hogfather,” “Mary and Max,” ‘Bronson,” “Timer” and “You, Me, and Everyone We Know.”

This Insty goes to the 2008 claymation which Netflix categorizes as “dark,” “quirky,” and “mind-bending,” “Mary and Max.”

This brings us to The Best TV Series Available on Netflix Instant Play, and the nominees include: “Arrested Development,” “Skins,” “The Office” (American version), “The Kids in the Hall” and “Law and Order: Criminal Intent.” Though all of these series have an average rating of 3.9 or higher, the winner is “The Office” with an average rating of 4.5 stars.

Our last award of the year is the classic Best Picture on Netflix Instant Play Award. The nominees are: “The Fountain,” “Amelie,” “The Fall,” “Up” and “An Education.”

With an average rating of 4.3 stars, the Insty goes to Disney and Pixar’s animated masterpiece, “Up.” Who didn’t see that one coming?

If you have a Netflix account, I hope that you’ll check these movies out (with the exception of “Gigli,” of course). Please join us again next year; rumor is that Ellen DeGeneres will be hosting.
