A Loyola student claims that he let two men, one of them armed, take him in their vehicle to make a cash withdrawal more than two weeks ago.
According to a report from University Police, the student claimed that he was walking somewhere on Prytania Street around 2 a.m. on Feb. 13.
The student said that two men pulled up in a black sport utility vehicle, possibly a Ford Explorer, and asked how much cash he had. When they found out that he only had $3 with him, the men apparently demanded that he come with them to the Bank One on the 2200 block of St. Charles to make a $200 withdrawal.
The student says the driver was a black man with a light complexion, about 260 lbs. and bald. He was wearing a black leather coat.
The passenger, who allegedly worked as the gunman, was described as a black man with a dark complexion, a red flannel shirt and wearing blue jeans.
A New Orleans Police Department spokesman said that the only crime similar to the one UP reported was a man who called around 1:15 a.m. to say that he’d been robbed near Prytania and Aline.
According to the NOPD, the man said the robber was wearing camouflage clothing and approached him as he was walking. When officers arrived, the caller had left the scene and no further information was taken.
University Police have warned students not to resist armed robbers unless they try to take a victim elsewhere, but the Loyola student says both men drove off after he gave them the cash.
Police Capt. Roger Pinac said that students must be careful to avoid putting themselves in dangerous situations to begin with. Statistically speaking, he said that going with an armed robber is a bad idea.
“There are no right or wrong answers. You can run or comply, but in the end it’s hard to determine which action is best outside of a specific situation,” he said. “That student was very lucky.”
