The Loyola soccer team evened its record over the Labor Day weekend at 2-2, securing a 1-0 win over Harris-Stowe and downing Lambuth 2-1.
The ‘Pack outshot Harris-Stowe at Westfeldt Stadium on Saturday 12-3. Loyola was able to turn one of its 12 shots into the only goal of the game. General studies sophomore Lindsay Diak scored the game winner on a direct kick.
Diak scored once more in the ensuing game against Lambuth in Jackson, Tenn., as did teammate drama/communications freshman Christine Pleban, who won it for the team in the game’s 65th minute on an assist from Diak and Michaela Bono, music business junior.
Math sophomore Kelly Gould and Carrie Lipnick, sociology freshman, had assists in the victory. Loyola goalkeepers made nine saves in the match; Rihana Dawkins had five saves, and international business freshman Sarah Arthrell had four.
Pleban’s goal broke open what had been a 1-1 tie after Lambuth’s Amber Guillory scored on a breakaway to tie the game after halftime.
Coach Emmy Therrell said that she was pleased with her team’s effort in both games.
“We displayed great mental toughness in the second half of [the Lambuth game],” she said. “In the first half we looked tired, but we showed great heart and determination, and in the second half we were able to turn the tables and look like the more energetic team.”
While the Wolfpack had solid individual performances, Therrell said she was more impressed by what she saw out of her team as a cohesive unit in each game, especially the team’s will to win in the second half of the Lambuth game.
“We kept working as a team. We have the talent, and now we’re at full strength,” she said. “We were the same team as in the first half, but we wouldn’t give up, and wouldn’t let our minds let up on our intensity level. That kind of mental toughness takes you to a higher level.”
