The Loyola women’s volleyball team finished conference play on a winning note Saturday. The Wolfpack (16-10) defeated Belhaven College in straight games, 30-16, 30-24, 30-28, in Loyola’s last home match of the season. The victory gave the ‘Pack a 6-2 record in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference play. The Spring Hill Badgers (6-1) can clinch the GCAC regular season title tonight with a victory against Belhaven. A Badger loss would give Loyola a share of the regular season title.Coach Tommy Harold said that the regular season title does not mean much and that the conference tournament winner is the real GCAC champion. The GCAC tournament will be Nov. 14 and 15 in Mobile, Ala.”We’re right there,” Harold said. “It’s just a matter of making plays when we need to. We just need to execute. Against Dillard (on Oct. 30), we were a play or two away from having a different result. We’ve just got to find a way to make those plays.”In the third game against Belhaven, the ‘Pack trailed 27-24 before scoring six of the next seven points to win the game 30-28. General business junior Ashley Cobette sealed the victory with a kill.Cobette led the attack with 13 kills; history senior Suzi Ruiz had 42 assists, and accounting sophomore Kelly Fridge led the defense with 18 digs.”The victory gives us a little push for the stretch run. But it’s tough to say where we are with beating Belhaven, because we should win that match 99 times out of 100. It was nice that we were able to fight back (in the third game) and take that one.”The Wolfpack travels to Marion, Ind., to compete in the Indiana Wesleyan tournament this weekend in its final tune-up before the GCAC tournament.Harold said that he won’t try anything radically different in this weekend’s matches.”There will be good competition in Indiana,” he said. “We’ve already tried a lot of different things throughout the year. But we’ve got some nagging injuries, so we always have to be prepared to make a change. To make a big change at this point won’t do us much good. We must do the things we can do and play to our strengths.”
