Loyola University Community Action Program has announced its new executive board for the fall of 2010.
Chris Castaneda, music senior, has been elected as the new chairman replacing current co-chair members Jamie Broussard, sociology senior, and Chad Carson, sociology senior.
Other new e-board members include Amanda Williams, English junior; Samantha Montano, psychology sophomore; Jill Douglas, sociology sophomore; Gabriela Rivera, mass communication senior and Annie Halbert, music senior.
According to Castaneda, he wants to improve student participation on campus, improve the organization of projects and bringing back reflection, which is an open forum among the executive board on social justice issues.
“Some problems I’ve been hearing from students is that LUCAP is really unorganized and it’s kind of been a turn off for them,” he said.
“It’s a shame because there are a lot of people who would be interested in some of the service projects but they show up one day and no one is there or the person is late showing up.”
To alleviate that problem, Castaneda said he visited different universities during spring break to get ideas on how to attract more people who want to be involved.
“If you’re able to get people fired up about something, you can cause something great to happen,” he said.
Castaneda said he thinks the new executive board will work effectively together and will accomplish good things.
“It’s going to be a great staff. All the people that are joining me have been emerging leaders in LUCAP… I’m really excited,” he said.
