With a perfect 5-0 record to start the season, the Sloppy Roast Beef Eaters intramural flag football team has put themselves in position to repeat as league champions.
Though the team is named the SRBE, nothing about the teams’ stats would indicate any sloppiness on the field. One of the reasons for the team’s success is quarterback and Loyola alum 07′ Trey Fury who is atop the leader board in passing touchdowns with 3.6 per game. Even the players who haven’t faced SRBE on the gridiron are well aware of how strong their offense is.
“They are the stuff of legends,” said Nick Serena, music industry business freshman who plays quarterback for Phi Psi, a team that hasn’t appeared on SRBE’s schedule yet.
“I have heard stories of their high octane offense and their ability to spread the ball around and make things happen in the passing game, Serena said. While many other teams in the league set regular times to practice Fury said one of the main keys to the team success is chemistry. “We never really practice,” Fury said.
“I have to get guys out there to catch passes before the season starts but we’ve just been playing together for so long We know what each others thinking before it happens.”
Many teams have limited running games because most teams would rather make players available as receivers. This can make having a quarterback that runs advantageous. In additions to leading the league in passing touchdowns Fury is also 4th in the league in rushing touchdowns, averaging 0.6 per game.
Fury is still a quarterback who looks to pass first saying, “Sometimes it takes one of our teammates to tell me to runs. Sometimes I get a little pass happy and want to force the balls in when it might be more prudent to tuck the ball in and run for a few yards,” Fury said.
It is not just the team’s offense that has put them at the top of the league. Its defense has given trouble to many opposing offenses. The team has the league leaders in safeties with 0.4 per game. The team’s defensive prowess is also evident in the teams point differential. The team has scored 153 points in five games but has only given up 51 points for a differential of 102 points.
“The defense has done an unbelievable job all season,” said Fury. “Every year that we have been playing we put a lot of pressure on opposing team’s offenses.”
SRBE is off to a good start, but they are only a game up on Phi Psi and the Step Dads, who are tied for seconds place.Fury says that they cannot afford to take any team they face lightly. “One thing that’s made our team successful is that we take very single person seriously,” he said “We feel that any team at any time could beat us so we need to bring our A game every time,” said Fury.
