The Department of Theatre Arts and Dance is presenting “Almost, Maine,” a comedy written by John Cariani about life in a small town in northern New England.
The play tells the story of the mythical town of Almost and the quirky romances that develop among its residents. “It’s a love-story, but it’s the farthest thing possible from cliché, thus I really enjoyed working on it,” said Vera Aaron, actress. “The whole process was thoroughly enjoyable. We’re a tight-knit cast that gets along so great, and we all are very close with our director, who’s been incredible to work with.”
Director, and visiting assistant theater arts professor, C. Patrick Gendusa said, “It is such a charming and heart-warming piece about love. We are hoping that our audiences may find this endearing little show just the ticket for escaping from cell phones and city tensions to a world where a kiss is not just still a kiss but a life changing big deal.”
The show features only four actors. Gendusa said, “It’s a wonderful opportunity for the four actors. They portray about five characters each.” Auditions for the production were held Aug. 31, and rehearsals began shortly after. “The rehearsal process has been quick but great, said stage manager Gretchen Hirt, theater junior and stage manager. “We actually had our first read through on Sept. 3 so we have only been rehearsing for a little less than a month.”
Hirt said, “I hope seeing this production will make everyone look around and appreciate all the beautiful people in their lives that they love. ‘Almost, Maine’ shows that love is a very real and powerful thing. This is truly a magical production.”
“Almost, Maine” runs Oct. 1, 7, 8 and 9 at 8 p.m. and Oct. 2 and 3 at 2 p.m. in the Lower Depths Theatre. General Admission is $12; $8 for students and faculty. For tickets or additional information call 504-865-2074 or email [email protected].
