Political science junior Mack Doby was recognized as the second-best free-throw shooter in the nation by the NAIA. He is 56 of 59 from the charity stripe, good for a 94.9 percent average.The national honor for Doby comes after his Loyola record-breaking three-point performance last season. The statistical rankings cover the major offensive and defense catagories such as rebounding, shooting and assists.As Doby received the national honor for his performance so far this season, the team continued through the holiday break.On Nov. 30, the ‘Pack started an eight-game stretch with a tournament at St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas. In the first game the Wolfpack beat the host team, 76-71.Doby led all scorers with 23 points and was a perfect eight for eight from the free throw line. Chad Barnes, management freshman, added 17 points with a perfect seven for seven shooting performance from the field. According to head coach Jerry Hernandez, the team played a quality game.”It was a good road win for the team,” he said.The ‘Pack fell the next day to Mississippi College in Clinton, Miss., 68-50. The team was down by three points at half, but its shooting dropped to 31.3 percent from the field.Computer Science senior Brian Bowers led the ‘Pack with 15 points. Barnes added 11 points and seven rebounds.In the last home game of 2001, played on Dec. 5 vs. Millsaps College, the ‘Pack was one last-minute three-pointer away from sending the game into overtime.The ‘Pack made a late charge with less than five minutes to go, but fell short, missing two shots with seconds to play.The ‘Pack was down at halftime by only a point, but a cold shooting performance early in the second half allowed Millsaps to build a double-digit lead.General studies sophomore Jonathan Hernandez led the team with 16 points and nine rebounds. According to coach Hernandez, it was a learning experience.”We did a good job of coming back, but we need to finish off those games,” he said.The ‘Pack then hit the road on Dec. 13 and took on the University of Louisiana at Lafayette at the Cajundome.Loyola lost 81-61. The Cajuns were up by four at the half, but pulled away in the second half as the ‘Pack shot 40 percent from the field for the game. Barnes led the team with 18 points on 9 of 16 shooting from the field.On Dec. 19, the ‘Pack took on West Florida, which enjoyed its home court advantage and an 81-63 victory.West Florida shot 52.7 percent from the field for the game, compared to 42 percent shooting for the ‘Pack, and they held a 32-20 lead at the half. Barnes led the team again with 22 points and eight rebounds. Doby added 16 points with 50 percent shooting. As the new year began, so did conference play. The ‘Pack took on fifth-ranked Spring Hill on Jan 5. The team lost 64-37 and dropped its overall record to 5-12, 0-1 in conference play.The Badgers jumped on the ‘Pack from the beginning and never looked back. They began the game with a 16-2 lead with just over 10 minutes in the first half.Hernandez led the ‘Pack with seven points as the team shot only 26.5 percent from the field. Coach Hernandez said rebounding will be a key factor as the conference season gets into full swing.”We have got to get better at rebounding the ball on both ends of the floor,” he said.GCAC play opened at home on Jan. 12 as the ‘Pack took on the reigning conference champions and eleventh ranked Dillard.The Blue Devils blazed past the ‘Pack in the first half and held on to a 75-62 win.The ‘Pack was able to close the lead to single digits, but the Devils held on in the final minutes with free throws at the packed Den.Barnes led the team with 16 points, followed by Doby with 14. Zach Tyson, general business freshman, added 13 points with two baskets from behind the arc. Free throws played a huge factor in the game, according to coach Hernandez.”They shot 31 free throws to our eight,” he said. “It is hard to win a game when they have that many free baskets.”The ‘Pack continued its conference play with a 60-48 loss to the University of Mobile on Jan. 13 at Mobile.The ‘Pack was able to slice into a 18-point second half deficit, but Mobile held Loyola to seven points in the last seven minutes to stop the team’s late charge.Doby led the ‘Pack with 17 points, including three baskets from behind the arc. Barnes added 14 points as the ‘Pack fell to 5-13 overall, 0-3 in conference play.The ‘Pack has two upcoming home games. The team will take on Talladega in the Den at 7:30 p.m.Loyola will take on Tougaloo on Sat., Jan. 19 in the Hall of Fame game. At halftime, the newest members of the Loyola Sports Hall of Fame will be honored in a ceremony at mid court. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. The ‘Pack will hit the road again on Jan. 24 to play Xavier at 7:30 p.m.
