The Wolfpack soccer team lost to two teams that will be contending for the NAIA national championship this year, LSU-Shreveport and the University of Mobile, by a combined score of 18-1.
In this past weekend’s home match, the LSUS Lady Pilots came to Tulane’s Westfeldt Facility and defeated Loyola 7-0.
LSUS jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first half and didn’t look back.
Loyola struggled to put shots on goal – they managed just three shots, two of which were on frame.
Alicia Marshall scored two for the Pilots.
Goalkeeper Jordan Webster, international business freshman, had 10 saves.
Mobile 11 Loyola 1
Last Friday the Wolfpack took to the road to face the 15th-ranked Mobile Lady Rams for the second leg against its conference foe.
Heather Whitfield, international business sophomore, started things off brightly for the ‘Pack. After being awarded a penalty kick, Whitfield converted for a 1-0 advantage after the fourth minute.
But for the ‘Pack, that would be the last time Loyola would get a ball past the Rams keeper. Mobile ran off with seven goals in the rest of the first half to take a 7-1 advantage going into the break and added four more in the second to round out the final tally.
Although the result seemed out of hand, Coach David Poggi remained optimistic and took this weekend as a learning experience.
“They were an excellent challenge for us. They made it to the national tournament last year and they’re still up there,” he said. “We played the best two teams in the conference this weekend. They’re both national tournament contenders.
“Mobile, who we played on Friday is ranked 15th in the NAIA, and LSUS is not that far behind. Now we know what it’ll take to be competitive in conference, hopefully we’ll build on it as our season progresses.”
