Just as Loyola students have been busy winding down their scholastic semester, the Loyola baseball squad has been winding up its season with Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament hopes on its mind. The past two weeks have been very busy for the men in maroon and gold.April 26 saw Loyola take to the field for the first game of a three-game series against a strong LSU-Shreveport team.On the mound for the ‘Pack was Tory Western, accounting junior, who took the 6-0 loss against the Pilots’ Gene Stevens. Doug Neill, computer science senior, led all Loyola hitters, going 2 for 4. Saturday’s double-header against the Pilots would be a day to remember for coach Don Moreau and his ‘Pack players. Loyola’s GCAC Tournament prayers were answered when the ‘Pack ripped Shreveport for back-to-back victories and earned a berth in the Tournament. Loyola’s Scott Schenck (5-7) pitched a complete game for the victory, going six marvelous shutout innings before offering a lone run in the seventh. Schenck is a management junior. The final score was 4 to 1, thanks to the two RBIs of Western, and one RBI apiece from Ryan Moity, communications sophomore, and Mike ‘Scags’ Scaglione, political science senior. The ‘Pack’s Chad Stouder, general studies senior, also went 2 for 3 from the plate with a run scored. In the second game, Loyola’s Brad Showalter (7-5) gave up two runs on four hits, through six innings of mound work, while Ian Dorion (7-5) accepted the loss for the Pilots. Showalter is a communications senior. Ryan Mahoney, general business junior, saved the game, and maybe the season for the ‘Pack, with his relief of Showalter on the mound. Neill and Jeff Quates, communications sophomore, led Loyola (27-29, 18-12) offensively. Both went 2 for 3 with a RBI and a run scored in the 3 to 2 Loyola victory. Cole Reynolds led the Pilots (34-24, 18-12) going 2 for 3 with a run scored. This victory put the ‘Pack in the GCAC tournament, where it faced the University of Mobile in the opening game. The University of Mobile proved to be an unworthy opponent for the ‘Pack. Loyola defeated Mobile, 8-1, at Morgan Field, in Hattiesburg, Miss. Showalter (8-5), struck out two and did not walk a batter. Quates led the Wolfpack (28-29) going 3 for 5 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Schenck and Western each had three hits for the ‘Pack, which had 15 hits as a team. Mobile starter Keith West (6-4) pitched 1.2 innings, giving up four runs on seven hits and striking out two in the loss. Loyola now advances to the winner’s bracket in the four-team double-elimination tournament. The Wolfpack will play the winner of the LSU-Shreveport and William-Carey game on Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Morgan Field on the campus of William- Carey College.
