$2 photo offers $5 million glimpse into the past

Years of research and analysis have verified the second known photograph of Billy the Kid.

In 2010, Randy Guijarro purchased an antique tintype photograph of a group of men for $2 from a junk shop. A week after his purchase, Guijarro examined the photograph under a microscope and noticed one of the men resembled Henry McCarty, a.k.a. William H. Bonney, a.k.a, Billy the Kid.

With only one other known photograph of the notorious outlaw in existence, Guijarro took the tintype to Kagin’s Inc., a company specializing in Western Americana. Using facial recognition software, the photograph was authenticated as Billy the Kid along side his gang, The Regulators. The National Geographic Channel aired a special on the authentication of the photograph on Oct. 18.

Billionaire William Koch purchased the other photograph of Billy the Kid for $2.3 million in 2011. This photograph has been valued at $5 million.
