The university’s athletics history will be presented this month in a Monroe Library exhibit. The showcase, “Maroon and Gold: A History of Athletics at Loyola,” was put together by Special Collections and Archives in the library.
The library teamed up with the Office of Alumni Relations to open the exhibit, sponsored by the office of Intercollegiate Athletics and Wellness, as well as the office of Institutional Advancement, sharing with the Loyola community the history of the athletic program.
A special reception for the exhibit will be held Tuesday, January 20 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Collections room located on the third floor of the Monroe Library.
Some of the featured items on display will be sports memorabilia such as photos, articles, programs, ads, old jerseys and letterman sweaters that will allow those in attendance to revisit the past of former athletes and teams long ago.
“Students, faculty and alumni can come and find out about the history of the Wolfpack,” Athletic and Wellness Director Michael Giorlando said. “We had an abbreviated session where there was no athletic program but, Loyola has a glorified past.”
The reception will include former Loyola athletes who excelled during their tenure at Loyola. S. Derby Gisclair, an alumni who has written books on New Orleans baseball teams, will speak along with Giorlando and the Rev. Kevin Wildes, S.J., university president.
The reception will be open to all current and former Loyola students, faculty, and fans. Admission is $15 per person and covers the cocktails and hors d’oeuvres that will be available. Tickets may be purchased on the alumni website.
