Angeli on Decatur is decked out for Halloween with masks on the walls, spider webs, red candles, skeletons, and, as always, artsy films and haunting music. The restaurant is located across from the French Market (where you can get your pumpkins to sate your carving fix).
Angeli is also open 24-hours on Friday and Saturday.
Angeli is a meeting ground for all types that roam the Quarter; goths, tourists, punks and locals meet for late-night garlic bread or light drinks.
Food at Angeli is sure to please both your angelic and devilish sides.
The Angel Wings come as a large portion and taste great.
The Gates of Heaven pizza, with portobello mushrooms, roasted red peppers, garlic, red onions and goat cheese is one of the restaurant’s best.
However, you will have a hard time deciding between that and the Lucifer Special, which boasts pepperoni, Italian sausage, ham, caramelized onions and jalapenos.
For less than $10, you can go share a large with friends.
Pizza is a main feature, but there is a fine selection of sandwiches, wraps, and salads to be had as well.
The flavor of the spaghetti and meatballs is unique.
It tastes a little spicy, but is still delicious.
Some of the tastiest dishes at Angeli are the sandwiches.
Three of the best are the grilled chicken with marinara sauce, the artichoke and spinach with cheese, and the Angeli Special, with tomatoes, sauce, and various other wonderful ingredients.
All are made on the bread that they bake on-site and come with your choice of french fries, salad, or pasta salad.
The pasta salad is amazing, but be forewarned, it’s very heavy on the oil, spices, and olives.
In fact, the whole menu is strong on the Mediterranean side, with oil and spices, but you also get some of the best Italian fare, such as pizza, salads, and calzones, you could desire.
For those with an insatiable sweet tooth, Angeli has tiramisu and chocolate cake. Their ice cream is also incredible.
The most unique feature of Angeli, apart from the creative names for the dishes, is the milk shakes.
Wings of Desire is made with espresso, chocolate ice cream and orange juice.
Gabriel’s Wake-Up Call is a customer favorite with espresso, coffee ice cream, and Coca-Cola.
If you are looking for a place to soak in the Halloween atmosphere, stop by Angeli. No better spot gives you as great a view of the throngs of people passing by on Decatur.
The costumed masses are on their way to The Whirling Dervish at 1135 Decatur, Molly’s at the Market, Frenchman Street, and other nefarious destinations.
You may have to beat your way to a table, but it’s worth it to take a break from your Halloween reveling in one of the best spots in the Quarter.
Café Brasil, located at the intersection of Frenchman St. and Chartres St., will have its annual free Halloween party tonight.
Ade, the bar’s owner and a native Brazilian, has been throwing this Halloween bash for the past 20 years.
There is no cover charge at the door. The party begins at 9 p.m. and goes until sunrise the next morning. “I am the slave of the bar,” said Ade of his “Halloween costume,” the same slave costume he wears every night of the year.
“You can never change,” Ade adds.
More than 1000 people are expected to come to the Halloween party. “This year we have been very popular with Loyola students,” said Ade, “and we are very happy about that.”
Party goers will enjoy up to seven bands this year including: Straightline, Saarava, Idle Time, Captain Midnight, and Nick Diaz and the Dirty Notes.
All the groups have various types of styles and sounds.
Café Brasil has been successful in picking bands that eventually become admired by locals.
None of the bands are paid to play but still, “everyone begs to play,” said Ade.
Every New Year’s Eve, Mardi Gras and Halloween, Café Brasil hosts a similar free party for up-and-coming bands to showcase their tunes.
“It’s not a showcase, it’s more like a madhouse,” said Ade.
