When many people think of Opera, certain images may pop to mind: Viking hats, for instance. Or perhaps overweight women.
Whatever your stereotype is, it’s probably not a petite blonde with an open smile.
But that’s exactly what Kate Fleming is.
Fleming, a soprano, will be part of the chorus in the New Orleans Opera’s “Pontalba” this October, a new opera set during the time of the Louisiana Purchase.
Written by Thea Musgrave, “Pontalba” takes place in New Orleans and tells the story of the Countess Pontalba and how she influenced the city.
Fleming admitted that while it is exciting putting on a new opera, there also are problems. Since “Pontalba” is a premiere, Fleming had no chance to hear or watch other performances in preparation.
“It’s an effort to bring something new to the community, but worth it,” she said.
Fleming is no stranger to the musical world. She has played Poopsie in “The Pajama Gang,” Chava in “Fiddler on the Roof,” and Marti in “Grease.”
In 2002, she was part of the chorus in Loyola’s production of Strauss’ “Die Fledermaus.” This summer, she spent several weeks in Arkanasas at the Opera in the Ozarks camp.
At the camp, there were 50 singers in attendance, and four operas were performed. Fleming played Gretel in the production of “Hansel and Gretel.” Next spring, she will play The Queen of the Night in “The Magic Flute” here at Loyola.
Fleming said that when she was a child, seeing Disney heroines and watching them sing influenced her.
“Singing has always been a passion of mine-performing as a whole really. I thought I was going to be the next Celine Dion.”
Fleming also said that classical artists such as Sarah Brightman influenced her.
“Pontalba” will be playing at the Mahalia Jackson theater downtown on Oct. 2, 4, and 5.
