Wolfpack tallies first triumph of ’06
The Loyola men’s basketball team recorded its first win of the season against Wiley College 65-56 at The Den on Nov. 9, sporting their new white tops and shorts.
The Wolfpack went ahead definitively with 1:26 left in regulation, when accounting senior guard James Bunn fed history sophomore Torry Beaulieu a dime that Beaulieu finished with a lay-up.
Finance junior forward Mario Faranda led Loyola’s scorers with 14 points. General business freshman guard Sean Bennett contributed 11 points.
General business freshman forward Nick Tusyznski, who was featured this week in the print edition of The Maroon, came off the bench to add nine points and nine rebounds.—————————————————–Three-and-out: Men Lose to Troy 87-52
It’s been three-and-out for the men’s basketball team in their tilts against NCAA Div. I teams – before the 87-52 loss to Troy University, the men fell to UNO in their season opener and to Southern Miss. in Hattiesburg.
Loyola led 11-5 with 17:10 to go in the first half and they enjoyed their advantage throughout the game’s first seven minutes.
From there, Troy strung together a 10-0 run that gave them the lead for good.
Psychology junior guard Luke Zumo paced the ‘Pack’s scoring with 13 points. General business freshman post man Nick Tuszynski continued playing well off the bench for coach Giorlando – in his backup role, he tallied 10 points and pulled down eight boards.
Cedric Jackson (16 points on 7-of-14 shooting), Richard Chaney (14 points) and Sammy Sharp (13 points) all scored in double digits for Troy.
Up Next: The ‘Pack faces Huston-Tillotson in The Den on Saturday. The game tips off at 3 p.m.—————————————————–
Women’s Basketball
She got game
Psychology sophomore guard Trenese Smith strung together two nights of surgically precise shooting: in a loss against Freed-Hardeman on Nov. 4, she connected on 4-of-4 field goals and 5-of-5 shots from the charity stripe; and in a win over Concordia College on Nov. 10, she nailed all eight shots she took from the field and all four she took from the foul line.
That’s 12-of-12 from the field and 9-of-9 from foul shots – a perfect buck in both categories.—————————————————–Loyola falls to Troy
Management junior Catherine Blanchard came into Loyola’s 75-52 loss against Troy University last Saturday averaging a pair of points a game.
She left with the performance of a lifetime under her belt after posting a career-high 14 points.
Blanchard was Loyola’s only scorer in double figures.
Just like their male counterparts, the Lady Wolfpack led by as many as six points in the first seven minutes of the game.
Once Troy took the lead, they never surrendered it.
Coach DoBee Plaisance and the Lady ‘Pack return to The Den on Saturday at 1 p.m., when they tip off against Texas Wesleyan.—————————————————–

Loyola Volleyball is Tennessee-Bound
Coach Tommy Harold and Loyola’s volleyball team merited a fifth-seed bid to the NAIA Region XIII tournament held in Cleveland, Tenn., on Nov. 17-18.
They drew Lee University, top seed in the region and tournament hosts, and Belhaven College in Pool A.
Two teams advance from each pool to play in Saturday’s championship round. Semis serve up at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
Finals serve up at 5 p.m.
Loyola, led by offensive phenoms Colleen McNerney (psychology junior) and Mary Seals (general business junior), lost its only match to Lee this year 3-1.
The Lady Wolfpack dealt Belhaven two regular season sweeps before Belhaven returned the favor in the GCAC tournament semifinals.
