If you have ever been sitting in your dorm room, wishing that there were something more active for you to do with your time so, intramurals may be just the ticket.
Unlike collegiate athletics, participation in intramural sports does not take natural skill, stellar physical shape or even a commitment to the practice and perfection of a game. It only takes a couple of hours each week to become an athlete.
Any Loyola student or alum can try his or her hand at flag football, volleyball or soccer in the fall and softball, basketball or floor hockey in the spring. Students also can participate in the annual three-point contest, racquetball tournament or three-on-three basketball games.
Bea Forlano, management senior and SGA president, is one of many athletes who participate in numerous intramural sports every year.
“Intramurals are a getaway to stay active and competitive and have fun,” Forlano, a former female intramural athlete of the year, said. “It’s a good way to get to know people.”
According to Mike Berthelot, assistant director of Recreational Sports, about 2,000 would-be athletes will participate over the course of the year, with Greeks, organizations and residence halls fielding teams.
Berthelot said he expects nearly 30 flag football teams alone.
“The program is going well,” Berthelot said. “I’ve been here for four years, and when I first came, we didn’t have as many teams or consistency of where to play and when. Now, we’ve been able to establish a field for the last four years.”
