Since it first aired in 1975, Saturday Night Live has put out some great comedic actors.
Many have gone on to success in films and television.
David Spade is one of these actors.
He is famed for starring as the uptight jerk alongside the late Chris Farley in various film farces.
Spade’s newest vehicle, “Dickie Roberts: Former Child Sta,r” gives him the opportunity to be in the spotlight and to act like the bumbling idiot we all know he can be.
Flash back to the ’70s.
As an actor on a prime-time television show in his youth, Dickie (Spade) was the darling of the evening comedy, “The Glimmer Gang.”
He was adored by audiences and could do no wrong.
But then Dickie turned six.
Show ratings slipped.
Dickie’s show was cancelled, and his mother abandoned him.
He found himself alone with no prospects.
Now, years later, Dicke works as a valet.
He hangs out with other child actors, such as Danny Bonaduce, David Cassidy and Corey Feldman.
But when he decides to pursue a role that could restart his career, he realizes that his lack of a “real” childhood makes him woefully inadequate for the part.
So, to regain his fame, he hires a family to give him the childhood he never had.
It’s typical SNL actor comedy fare, with a few great laughs, some good laughs, and a lot of immature humor.
But who said anything was wrong with immature humor?
The movie, despite its seventh-grade jokes, is entertaining.
The plot is interesting, not because of Dickie’s own struggles, but mainly because the children of the family he’s hired, Sally (Jenna Boyd) and Sam (Scott Terra), are often more mature than the adults in the movie.
They add an interesting dynamic to the movie, yet you can’t help but think that in another 20 years, they’ll be facing the same problems as Dickie.
In all, it’s a good show, and if you have a rainy afternoon, go see it.
Otherwise, wait for the video.
