Louisiana State University flute faculty member Katherine Kemler started her performance in Roussel Hall on Tuesday night with a piece entitled “Techno Yaman.”
This piece utilized both the flute and the electric keyboard/drum machine.
The piece was based on north Indian ragas, rock music and electronica.
Kemler performed as part of a music professor exchange program.
Kemler and her accompanists are all music instructors at LSU.
She also premiered a flute and saxophone piece composed by her husband, Paul Hayden.
“Janus” used nouveau techniques along with nonstandard melodies to call to mind the imagery of the two-faced Roman god for which it is named.
The final piece of the performance was the “Godard Suite.”
This classical suite was played beautifully, full of flowing notes, powerful crescendos, and playful melodies.
Kemler will be teaching a master class in Nunemaker Auditorium on Sept. 23 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Loyola students under Instructor Patti Adams will be performing pieces which Kemler will critique.
Admission to watch the class is free.
