As the Best Picture list expanded from five to ten films nominated this year, the nominees that probably wouldn’t have been there last year now have a shot. One such film, “A Serious Man,” expertly captures the sense of not-quite fitting in with society via a Jewish professor in the 1960s Midwest. Directed with the oddball characteristics of the Coen Brothers (allegedly based on the experiences of their father), the film deftly conveys the sense of what it means to be an outsider.
In “Up in the Air,” George Clooney portrays a man who has willfully alienated himself from humanity, both in his line of work and in his human connections. Nominated for Best Actor, Clooney’s performance appears effortless, but he has finally grown into a true actor. This is an exceptional performance in a layered role that visibly grows from one end of the spectrum to the next.
As the emotional center of “Crazy Heart,” Maggie Gyllenhaal earned a Best Supporting Actress nomination because of her fearless ability to hold her ground with Jeff Bridges, in the role of his long career. Gyllenhaal conveyed the wariness of making the same mistakes twice and how powerful a mother’s love can be.
Each of the nominees in every category rightfully earned their nominations. While it would be wonderful to witness all of their performances, frankly it may be too time consuming. But remember these abovementioned competitors when it comes to those who excelled in 2009.
