Loyola’s seven-game win streak came to an end and with it any hopes of a Gulf Coast Athletic Conference title. The ‘Pack lost a semifinal match against eventual champion Mobile, 79-74.
Freshman and junior guards Trenell Smith and Kiely Schork each scored a game-high 22 points. The duo converted on eight 3-pointers combined (8-for-17) and Schork, communications junior, went a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line.
The ‘Pack shot 7-of-13 from 3-point range in the first half to finish just behind 45-43 at half. The Lady Rams defense proved to be too much, as the ‘Pack converted on 2-of-12 3-pointers in the second half and shot a mediocre 38.6 percent from the field (27-70) compared to Mobile’s 56.1 percent (32-57).
Mobile also had a 40-29 advantage on the boards.
Loyola rebounded from a 2-4 start in the season to finish 9-5, including wins over Mobile and LSU-Shreveport twice.
Among the awards garnered this year, juniors Dani Holland and Schork were named to the All-GCAC team.
The 5-foot-7 Holland led the ‘Pack in rebounds, assists, steals and blocks. Holland, criminal justice junior, ranked fourth in the NAIA in defensive rebounds per game with 7.3, 11th in total rebounds per game with 9.3 and knocked in 11.6 points per game.
The 5-foot-3 Schork led the ‘Pack with 12.2 points per outing and ranked seventh in the NAIA in 3-pointers per game (2.9).
