New Orleans will always be a football city, but for us Saints fans, the season ended a long time ago. With a possible NFL lockout next season that would leave us without a single game in the Dome, what would the Who Dat Nation do every week? Forget next season, what do we do now? We all need to remember that the Saints aren’t our only team. The Hornets are now in the spotlight.
As the saying goes, the Hornets’ season starts when the Saints’ season ends. To a lot of us, basketball season may seem like it’s just beginning, but the Hornets are 32-21 this season, giving them a good shot at the playoffs.
The Hornets, though, can’t win the playoffs alone. If we want to have a second championship team in New Orleans, we need to remember how the Saints got to, and won, the Super Bowl.
The Saints have Sean Payton and his team of All-Star players including Drew Brees, Jonathan Vilma and Tracy Porter. The Hornets have first-year head coach Monty Williams, who has led the Hornets to their first 10-game winning streak in franchise history and crafted one of the top defenses in the NBA. With players like David West and Western Conference All-Star Chris Paul, the Hornets have the talent, but like the Saints, they need the city.
The Hornets struggled to meet attendance goals during the beginning of the season and faced financial problems that forced the NBA to buy the team. This is our team and they’re a pretty good one. We need to support them just like we do the Saints.
