Twenty-nine games into the season, the Loyola baseball team sits at seven games under .500 with an 11-18 record and is currently near the bottom in the Southern States Athletic Conference with a 1-14 conference record. The losses have come due to some very inconsistent play and a tough schedule in conference play.

Their most recent series were against conference leader Lee University and University of Mobile. Lee has the third-highest winning percentage in all of Division I NAIA baseball, while Mobile is ranked eighth in the conference.

Wolfpack baseball was swept in the series against Lee 3-0 and outscored 31-3, with the closest game having a score of 3-7. 

“We knew going into the weekend it was going to be very tough. We all competed. Unfortunately, it didn’t result in a win,” said Evan Turkish, management senior and first baseman.

The team had University of Mobile next on their schedule in a three-game series. The Wolfpack has posted a 7-4 record against Mobile over the last three seasons, including a 1-1 series split earlier this season.

Mobile came into the game on a three-game winning streak, and it continued as they faced Loyola at home. Mobile swept the three-game series with the scores of 7-3,11-2 and 4-0.

The two sweeps by conference opponents caused Loyola to fall to last place in the Southern States Athletic Conference standings.

“I think the first half has been fairly successful,” Turkish said, but he also said he sees how the team can improve their performance.

“We just need to be more consistent and get the guys back who have been injured,” Turkish said.
