Two Loyola students, political science junior Andrew Vo and psychology and criminal justice junior Brittany Chavez, recently received the Gilman scholarship to study abroad. The scholarship is given to students at 2-or 4-year universities.
Chavez is studying abroad in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria during the spring 2011 semester at the American University in Bulgaria through the International Student Exchange Program. Vo was awarded $5,000 to continue studying abroad in Japan.
Currently he is in Hirakata City at Kansai Gaidai University and will be continuing his study abroad in Japan at Nihon University in Mishim, through ISEP. The scholarship had about 6,248 students apply in about 111 countries and two of the recipients are from Loyola.
The program encourages non-traditional study abroad and is funded through the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000, and is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State.
