Loyola’s cross-country program recently honored 10 members of the All-Decade team during halftime at a men’s basketball game.
“The All-Decade team helps honor those student athletes who have excelled on and off the field. We do this with all of our programs. We have had some outstanding young men and women sacrifice on the cross-country team over the past 10 years and the athletic department wanted to pay tribute to them,” said Michael Giorlando, athletic director.
“The cross-country team is pretty simple; it’s individual records and individual times. So it’s those student athletes who have excelled in the conference meets and in national meets,” Giorlando said.
“We look at them as great ambassadors for the university while they were here and as they moved on,” Giorlando said.
In order to make the All-Decade team, cross-country coach Andy Canegitta took athletic performances and academic performances and found the fastest times.
“You need seven to make a team, so I basically looked at the top times, along with how many times they went to nationals, qualified for nationals, and participated in regionals.” Canegitta said.
