Loyola University’s basketball teams hosted Dillard University Saturday, Jan. 25 and ended the night with two wins.
The Loyola women’s basketball team trailed most of the game but turned it around against the Lady Bleu Devils 54-48 Saturday in the Den.
The Lady ‘Pack was outscored in the first half by only nine points. The team missed several shots and trailed 35-19 by halftime.
The team made 14 consecutive baskets in the second half and cut the lead to 35-33 Dillard.
Keiva Council, sociology sophomore, led the team with 15 points. She made all of her points after the first half.
The Lady Bleu Devils expanded the lead by six points with free throws. They fouled Trenese Smith, marketing senior, and her free throws once again gave Loyola their first lead of the second half.
Dillard answered Smith’s free throws with a field goal from their lead scorer. Council took the lead again with less than four minutes left on the game clock.
Loyola University men’s basketball team also won against Dillard’s Bleu Devils 82-77 with a close scoring game Jan. 23 in the Den.
Robert Manson, marketing senior, shot five of six field goals and led the team with 15 points. Manson also made five of five free throws.
Cameron Cates, marketing sophomore, also shot five of six field goals, adding 10 points to the Wolfpack’s scoreboard.
The Wolfpack was down three points at halftime, but the team turned things around in the second half. Manson gave Loyola a one point lead with a lay-up after some empty shots from the Bleu Devils.
Nick Tuszynski, economics senior, made a two pointer after a pair of free throws made by Sean Bennett, management senior, bringing the score to 76-75 Loyola. Tuszynski’s shot was answered by a layup from Dillard, which gave them their 77 points.
The Bleu Devils tried to win the game with a drive through the lane, but Cates made a defensive block with less than two minutes on the clock. Cates’ block led to a two-point basket by Corey Gray, biological sciences sophomore.
Bennett got fouled after a missed three-pointer by the Bleu Devils. His pair of free throws made the winning basket and bought the Wolfpack’s record 12-6.
Wolfpack basketball will host William Carey University in the Den, Saturday, Jan. 30.
