Taylor Domengeaux, the only sophomore on Loyola University’s baseball team, has been playing baseball since he was five years old. His long time dedication, talent and passion for the game has earned him numerous awards and been a positive impact on the team.
Though a number of junior colleges contacted Taylor his senior year of high school, he chose Loyola after the head coach, Coach “Gee” Cassard, contacted him.
“Loyola University was the option that provided me with the best education and the opportunity to play,” he said.
Domengeaux, a finance major from Luling, La., has been playing shortstop since his baseball debut.
“I like it because there’s a lot of action,” said. “I also like that it is a spot where you can be a leader on the field.”
New York Yankees’ shortstop Derek Jeter has been a positive influence in Domengeaux’s life because Jeter “leads by example and works hard,” much like Domengeaux himself.
Domengeaux’s athletic resume´ is quite impressive. He was named Most Valuable Player in his district, made the All-State team and also made the Academic All-State team.
In his freshman year of college, he was the winner of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Gold Glove.
Last year, Domengeaux played 51 games with 32 hits including three doubles and a home run. Domengeaux demonstrates his best qualities by leading by example, working hard and determination.
Domengeaux has not always been able to play baseball. He suffered a knee injury his junior year of high school and could not play for the season.
His love and passion for the game brought him back, and he has been playing constantly ever since.
Though Domengeaux also has experience in track and as an outside linebacker in football, he has stuck with baseball for specific reasons.
“I can see myself moving forward in baseball. I see more room for improvement,” he said.
Baseball has also stuck out to Domengeaux because the sport demands the best of its players and there are different challenges every day.
Though the team lost a very close game to Belhaven on March 20, Domengeaux states that for the upcoming Alexandria game, the team plans to stay focused, never give up and not to fade out.
Domengeaux plans to “constantly improve batting and pitching,” while maintaining his GPA above a 3.5.
