Dear Editor,
My name is also Megan Iverson and I am troubled by the article entitled “Iverson Resigns from Student Government”, not only because I believe it to be a slanderous and gossipy article, not worthy of the front page, but because I have been approached by students, professors and Loyola alumni, all under the impression that I am the subject of the damaging article.
Due to its title, and the small size of Loyola’s student body, there has been serious confusion which is negatively affecting my reputation here at Loyola. In my opinion, the article does not sufficiently differentiate me from the subject of the article, Meghan Iverson; simply stating a students’ major does not make a distinct differentiation, obviously.
I recognize in this situation, a picture of the student is inappropriate; however, the article itself, based on hearsay, was not appropriate for a respected college newspaper either. If there were two professors in the business school with the same name, I believe the proper steps would have been taken to make it clear to at least the majority of readers the intended subject of the article.
I am an understanding woman, but when my reputation is jeopardized because of an unclear Maroon article, I feel wronged. What I ask is that a correction is printed, and request that in the future the Maroon fully distinguishes between individuals who have the same or similar names; even more so when the article is defamatory.
I graduate in one week, and I would like to be remembered by my academic accomplishments and the relationships I have formed here at Loyola; hopefully with this correction, that is the case.
Sincerely,
Megan Iverson Finance ’07
