Big Baby is a tough band to pigeonhole. At first, when listening to the local group, you might think they’re a punishing metallic punk band. Then all the sudden you find yourself tapping your feet and bobbing your head because you just got served a catchy melody.
But it gets more interesting. Not only do they bring their dance-inducing punk roots to the stage, they mix in a little funk, featuring Chris Prince on bass and Dan Fox on drums. And it doesn’t stop there. Once you get past the attention-grabbing instrumentation, you’ll discover their fantasy-themed lyrics, as if the band watched “Legend” and was inspired to write songs like “Goblin Church” and “Warlock Adventures” off their new self-titled EP.
They bring to the table a smorgasbord of musical and thematic genres that will make you laugh and get you pumped. Their stage presence is unpredictable but always whimsical – they bounce around, Prince and guitarist/vocalist Brian Serpas (Prince’s older brother) will team up on the microphone, and guitarist Isidore Grisoli has been known to bust a mean spiral head-bang.
Big Baby is a relatively new band, whose members hail from previous projects such as Christ Reverse Psychology Experiment, The Red Beards, The Faeries and Hatchback. More people turn out to each show as buzz begins to generate about the four talented goofballs who are making something fresh and accessible. Catch the next show at Circle Bar on March 1.
