Cameras that catch cars running red lights have made their way to intersections in the New Orleans area. But unlike the ones stationed in Jefferson Parish, these cameras can also catch cars speeding through intersections during yellow lights.
These nine cameras, which will start nabbing cars after Mardi Gras, are stationed at intersections on South Carrollton Avenue – at Canal Street, Earhart Boulevard and the Palmetto Street-Washington Avenue intersection. There are also also cameras at the Poydras Street and Loyola Avenue intersection.
Motorists will be fined $100 for running a red light, and anywhere between $40 and $200 for speeding through an intersection – the fine depending on the speed, with 20 mph over the limit earning the $200 ticket. An administrative fee up to $75 is also tacked onto the ticket. Drivers earning tickets will receive their ticket, along with the picture, in the mail.
