The New Orleans Police Department arrested a Cabra Hall resident for criminal damage to property after she smashed her suitemate’s laptop computer and digital camera with a hammer, according to suitemates and several of her fellow residents.
Fredreaka Jack, computer information sophomore, was placed under arrest by NOPD at 11:04 p.m. on Monday, March 7 in Cabra Hall.
“She was transported to Central Lock-up by NOPD,” Roger Pinac, university police captain, wrote in an e-mail to The Maroon. “She was arrested for criminal damage to property.”
Jim Eiseman, vice president of student affairs, declined to comment on the matter, stating he is unable to comment on any disciplinary action for any student.
However, Pinac said that Jack will be charged through both the university disciplinary system as well as through the local criminal court.
M’lyn Usie, music business sophomore and owner of the laptop, first learned what happened from roommates who were already in the suite.
“I came in, and the keypad was caved in, and the buttons were popped off,” she said. “She told me she was just pissed off and felt better afterwards.”
Usie said that when she informed her resident assistant of the situation, Jack admitted to hammering the equipment.
“She brought the computer downstairs to show them,” Usie said. “She didn’t seem to care.”
Usie said that Jack told her she was mad at a Chinese man and that was why she destroyed the computer. Usie added that she doesn’t know what to think of the incident.
“Fredreaka always was a little bit strange,” she said. “She was always laughing at nothing and walking around naked.”
Ana Kossik, psychology sophomore, lives near Usie and saw Jack when she came outside with the ruined laptop in her hand.
“She was just laughing and singing,” Kossik said. “She had progressively got worse during the past two weeks. [She was] taking stuff from people’s rooms.”
Her suitemates did not believe that Jack would become violent.
“I liked her,” Usie said. “We all hung out at Mardi Gras. But she got crazy. We’re kind of scared of her now.”
This was not the first incident Jack’s suitemates found disturbing. The day before, Usie said, Jack removed a refrigerator from the suite next door; it had been left there by a student who moved out.
“She said it smelled really bad,” Usie said. “She told me she asked the boy [next door] if she could have it, and he said yes. So she took it down and dragged it down the street by the cord to a frat house and left it there.”
