A resolution to extend the filing period for potential congressional candidates was denied at the Student Government Association meeting. The resolution would have allowed students more time to decide if they wanted to run for an office next semester. It comes after many positions remained unopposed at the close of the filing period.
According to some students, several felt that this did not provide enough candidates to ensure a fair and representative election. After a two-hour debate, the resolution eventually failed. There is a growing concern among some members of Congress that apparent lack of interest in holding a position will lead to an election that is little more than a formality. The opposition to this resolution maintains that despite low turnout the process is fair because all students were given an equal chance to attend the pre-deadline meetings.
