Construction on Carrollton Hall
Sept. 3 – In a sense, Loyola provided its Carrollton Hall residents with a new wake-up service this year: construction. Working to repair mold intrusion, workers began construction every morning at 8 a.m. As of year’s end, only the seventh floor of the newly renamed dormitory has been fully renovated, with six floors remaining.
Student disrupts class
Nov. 5 – Shortly after finishing a quiz in his Production Theory and Practice class, communications junior Thomas Dodd Newton closed the classroom door and put a knife to his throat. After police convinced him to release his classmates, Newton was arrested and charged with 18 counts of false imprisonment. Those charges have since been dropped.
The Rev. Kevin Wildes, S.J., inaugurated
Oct. 29 – Two months after the school year began, Loyola officially installed the Rev. Kevin Wildes, S.J., as the 16th president of Loyola University. Faculty, students, prominent alumni and community members all gathered to celebrate the inauguration, which included a Mass, installation ceremony and reception.
Student stabbed on Freret Street
Oct. 1 – According to police reports, finance senior Michael Lloyd was walking home from a party when several men confronted him outside of Tulane’s Howard-Tilton Memorial Library. Two Loyola students as well as a former Loyola student now attending Tulane were arrested in connection with the incident.
Pope John Paul II dies
April 8 – It was evident that throughout campus, many students, faculty and staff greatly mourned the loss of Pope John Paul II. In addition to the white ribbons emblazoned across campus, University Ministry, the Jesuit Center, COMPASS and SGA held a memorial service for the Pope.
‘Vagina Monologues’ opens in Nunemaker
Feb. 18 – After its controversial cancellation last year, the Rev. Kevin Wildes, S.J., university president, allowed the play to be performed on campus. The play opened to a packed house. Wildes’ decision to allow the play, however, garnered him an admonishment from Archbishop Alfred Hughes.
‘Pack makes first NAIA tourney
March 11 – The Loyola women’s basketball team made its first NAIA national tournament appearance after a record 21-win season. This year turned out to be eventful for the athletic department as the Rev. Kevin Wildes, S.J., chose to renew the scholarship program through 2007-08.
Cabra resident arrested
March 18 – The New Orleans Police Department arrested a Cabra Hall resident for criminal damage to property after she allegedly smashed her suitemate’s laptop computer and digital camera with a hammer.
ADG/Beggars receive probation
March 18 – Alpha Delta Gamma and Beggars fraternity were found culpable on several charges stemming from a fight outside of the ADG house on Freret Street. Both fraternities were placed on probation through next year.
Ivan just misses city
Sept. 24 – Hurricane Ivan’s threat of striking New Orleans, which could have put the entire city under 20 feet of water, led Loyola to cancel four days of classes and spurred a massive voluntary evacuation, clogging the city’s highways to an unprecedented level.
