Assistant Director for Wellness Zach Bracey was disappointed by the turnout at the Intramural Showcase Aug. 31. As a co-curricular Wolfpack Welcome event, it was open to all students, although it was intended to inform freshmen of the different fields and divisions of competition offered this season.
Bracey said, “Bad timing may have been a factor due to the Labor Day weekend, and students may have been distracted by the upcoming holiday.”
The Intramural Program is open to all students, alumni, faculty and staff. According to Bracey, there is usually no shortage of competitors. “Each year we have as many as 30 to 35 teams,” he said.
The Rec Plex staff and students put together a co-ed team that won its division last year. The team was named “IYDKNYK,” or “If You Don’t Know Now You Know.”
Alumni teams like “6-Pack”were top competitors in past years but have not returned since Katrina.
Bracey said, “Last year a really good team organized (by) members of the baseball team competed in the men’s division. They called themselves the Sloppy Roast Beef Eaters and were the champions of the division.”
The Sloppy Roast Beef Eaters also took home the first place trophy in the men’s division at the first annual Voodoo Bowl. The event, organized by Bracey and Tulane’s Intramural Director, Nick Marinello, pits the top three teams from each university.
Bracey added, “Last year was lots of fun; it was a great time for everyone.”
Since the Voodoo Bowl is open only to students, “IYDKNYK” replaced the faculty and staff members on their team with students and competed in the co-ed division.
“They won and received the trophy – it’s a cool looking skull,” said Bracey.
The deadline to register for Intramural Football is Sept. 14 by 10 p.m. The games will be held on Sundays starting Sept. 23 at the Fly behind Audubon Zoo. Bracey also conducts Officials Clinics that teach the basic rules of flag football or other sports.
“No experience is necessary to attend the clinic, it’s about 3 or 4 hours long,” he said. Officials for intramurals are paid by the game. “It is a fun way to make extra money and is very interesting.”
