H1N1 virus affecting Loyola’s campus, there could not be a better time for a Health Expo, which will take place on Thursday, Sept. 10.
Kristy Salvaggio, associate director of wellness, is the event organizer, and will set the bar for this event since it has not been done before.
“We’ve had other events similar to this one, but this is the first time we’re making it a big event,” she said.
The event will have a wide array of guests and activities guided toward promoting healthy living. To do this, Salvaggio has organized five workshops, with the help of University Counseling Center, Human Resources, University Ministry and Dining Services.
“We will bring in different people interested in wellness to promote healthy living,” Salvaggio said.
There will be a blood donation talk with Dr. Francis R. Rodwig Jr., from Ochsner Medical Center, followed by a blood drive.
Another workshop will be Flu Prevention with Dr. James Tebbe from Ochsner Medical Center.
The other two workshops are an exercise class called “Superflow Class” and the counseling center will be offering a relaxation room for students and everyone involved in the Loyola community.
University ministry will take a metaphorical approach to exercise, offering a program they call, The Spiritual Exercises: Care of the Soul.
Dining Services collaboration in this event consists of providing Odwalla juice to the community.
Other events that will take place are a bike sale, a chef demonstration with Corey King, a dietician will be offering advice and there will be door prizes from Blue Cross and Blue Shield.
Salvaggio does not know how many people to expect at this event; however, there is a number participants she would like to achieve.
“We would love to have 100 people at this event,” she said.
At this point, Salvaggio wants to see how people respond to the event before thinking ahead to having this event in the future.
“We want to see how it goes this year before we commit making this a yearly event, but we would love to have it again next year,” she said.
