As candidates crowded around the Peace Quad to hear the announcement of election winners on Thursday, April 19, Student Government Association officials announced that the new president will be Khaled Badr.
“I’m very excited. I’m looking forward to continuity and change,” Badr said after his win was announced Thursday evening.
Badr is a biology pre-med junior. Since his arrival at Loyola three years ago, he has been involved in many activities on campus. He has served on SGA for one year. Badr is currently a senior Resident Assistant, a position he thinks has prepared him to be president by providing him with a platform to interact with the administration. Since University Planning Board and RAs work together, Badr said he believes his position as president will allow him to communicate effectively with UPB. He is also a part of the Loyola Univesrity Health Professions Organization and participates in Ignatian Volunteers.
Badr said he hopes to accomplish two main goals during his presidency.
“I want to make the communication between SGA and the student body much, much better than it was this year and in previous years, and I know how to do it through the liaison program,” he said.
The liaison program, one Badr has designed himself, will assign two or three senators to communicate with each organization in order to be more connected to the organization’s needs and concerns.
Additionally, Badr would like to make Loyola a greener campus. He wants to start his eco-friendly campaign by changing every light bulb around campus to energy efficient ones.
Badr said the election process was “very exciting,” and he looks forward to the upcoming year.
Former SGA president Michael Morin said he is confident in Badr’s abilities.
“I am very happy with Khaled as the newly elected SGA president,” Morin said. “While Khaled has only one year of experience in SGA, I believe that his other leadership experiences will assist him in breathing new life into the student government at Loyola.”
