Biological sciences senior Shelly Wu presented a new way to determine how long a corpse has been in the water at Loyola’s Biology Undergraduate Research Symposium on April 5. Wu’s research used algae growth on human hair to determine the length of time a corpse has been underwater. Using Styrofoam heads and even her own hair, Wu, along with Professor James Wee submerged samples in fresh and brackish water. Wu will continue her research at the University of Oklahoma in the fall.
