As of Aug. 1, 2013, the use of social media while driving has been banned in the state of Louisiana.
The new ban, which was signed into law on May 30 by Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, will eliminate the use of all social media websites while driving. The social media ban will join Louisiana’s ban on texting as a fineable offense.
Anyone in Louisiana who is caught using social media while driving could be ticketed for up to $175. Subsequent offenses can cost Louisiana drivers up to $500 in fines.
The ban on social media and driving came about due to the existing ban on texting and driving, which was signed into law in 2008.
Although the use of social media and texting has been phased out, the new law will not ban Internet use on smartphones while driving.
