All right boys and ghouls, if you’ve finally realized that you’re a little too old for trick-or-treating, but a wild night of idiot-watching in the Quarter isn’t your cup of blood, try checking out these movie rentals for an evening.
*Funniest Flicks:
“The Addams Family” and “Addams Family Values”
These movies could have been one of the pitiful examples of what happens when television moves onto the big screen, but fortunately the cast kept both movies afloat. More funny than spooky, The Addams Family and its sequel feature the late Raul Julia as well as Christopher Lloyd, Angelica Houston and a young Christina Ricci. Lighthearted and a good laugh, these two are a good way to lighten up your Halloween.
*Most Intense:
“28 Days Later”
A recent British import, “28 Days Later” isn’t your typical zombie movie. In a world where almost everyone is either dead or a “rage” zombie, a bike messenger who has just awakened from a coma finds himself fighting for his life. The movie was made on a budget, so expect a lot of strobe lightning and dollar-store blood, but it works well. Tense as well as scary, this movie makes for a good rental.
*Movie Your Girlfriend Will Make You Watch (A.K.A.: Hottest Villain):
“Interview with the Vampire.”
As a testament to our own resident vampires, I recommend “Interview with the Vampire.” With Tom Cruise playing the bad boy and Brad Pitt his long-suffering companion, how can you go wrong? Taking place in and around New Orleans over a period of several hundred years, “Interview with the Vampire” is both disturbing and beautiful at the same time.
*Movie Your Boyfriend Will Make you Watch (A.K.A.: Grossest Movie): “Evil Dead”
It takes a “special” sense of humor for someone to adore Bruce Campbell and this ultra gross movie, but it seems a lot of the men here on campus have it. Disgusting in the extreme, “Evil Dead” is the story of five friends who venture into the wilderness only to discover the “Book of the Dead.” Do I really need to tell you what happens after that? If you just happen to watch a few minutes of it waiting in line at House of Shock, it’s enough. It’s amazing how many uses Sam Raimi thought of for cottage cheese.
*Spookiest Movie:
“Hellraiser”The “Hellraiser” series
I’ll admit it. Though I can now look back on these movies with a little laugh, when I was younger, they scared me to death. Maybe it’s the rotting bloody mattress that serves as an altar, or the pins sticking out of the character’s face, or even the idea that the villain wears someone’s skin around like a mink. Whether you find them scary or not, the “Hellraiser” series are probably some of the grossest and scariest movies out there.
