During the summer of 1993, the Rev. James C. Carter, S.J., university president at the time, decided to replace several myrtle trees located on the parking spaces near Thomas Hall, with Washington palms. After this, many students and faculty members complained about a lack of environmental consciousness behind the project. The trees were uprooted in response to the request of members of the Jesuit community, who said the trees were ruining the paint jobs of the cars parked in the spaces near Thomas Hall.
