No Halloween-themed iTunes playlist is complete without a contribution from the end-all Halloween musical: “The Nightmare Before Christmas.” (Note: no offense meant to “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”.)
This two-disc special edition soundtrack not only incorporates every musical number from the original film, but also includes nine bonus tracks featuring various artists’ interpretations of certain songs.
Fiona Apple’s rendition of “Sally’s Song” is, of course, suitably creepy and avant-garde, just as it is obvious that Panic At the Disco must have pulled out their special Halloween eyeliner for their re-working of “This is Halloween.”
She Wants Revenge gives what can only be deemed an accurate description of what it would sound like if an indie electronica band plotted to abduct Kris Kringle with “Kidnap the Sandy Claws.” This track makes particularly good in-car listening with its steady driving beat and the unnervingly robotic vocals that have come to characterize the band.
The best new addition to the list, however, is undoubtedly Marilyn Manson’s satisfyingly sinister “This Is Halloween,” which breathes new life into the original in the form of Manson’s expressive shrieks and a pounding bass line. Fans of the movie will be pleasantly surprised by the new demo tracks featuring Danny Elfman’s booming voice, and the added perk of a 3-D cover make the set a must-have for any Halloween (or Tim Burton) enthusiast.
With a little luck and this soundtrack, any careful party-goer might be able to completely avoid “The Monster Mash” this Halloween.
