Loup Garou is coming to Loyola on April 17, with the Student Government Association bringing Everclear, Blind Melon and Rebirth Brass Band to the Howlin’ Wolf.
“We want to recreate traditions. Originally, in December 1998, Loyola started having an outdoor concert at the Palm Court. We wanted to bring it back,” said Adam Kohler, SGA vice president and political science senior.
“Loup Garou” is the name of a swamp creature in Cajun folklore. In the past, SGA organized the event with other student organizations. This year the concert is fully funded and organized by SGA.
“We hope to have the best possible concert to create a buzz so that students look forward to it next year,” SGA President Elliot Sanchez, philosophy senior, said.
Last summer, Sanchez and Kohler decided to bring Loup Garou back to campus. They started planning for it in September, and have received advice and feedback from the University Programming Board and SGA senators.
“We couldn’t be happier with the lineup,” Sanchez said.
Everclear is an alternative rock band with past hits such as “Father of Mine.” They have just come out with a new album and New Orleans is one of the first stops on their tour.
“We were looking for a band students will remember and who have a great live presence,” Sanchez said.
Many students remember Everclear from middle school.
“I love all of the bands. They’re old- school which is always fun,” Rebecca Gardner, marketing sophomore, said.
Rebirth Brass Band is always a staple in New Orleans culture, Kohler said. Blind Melon is a rock band that was popular in the 1990s. They are still releasing new music.
However, not all students are as excited by Loup Garou’s lineup.
“I feel the lineup should be more diverse and incorporate everyone’s interests in music,” Jessica Burg, accounting junior, said.
Tickets are free for Loyola’s graduating seniors, $5 for Loyola students and $15 for other college students.
SGA-sponsored free buses will leave from the Mercy parking lot, and will shuttle students to and from the event. Students can buy tickets during the window on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Also, tickets will be sold Monday through Friday in the SGA office from noon to 4 p.m. Once Loyola tickets are sold, tickets will be available to other college students on the Howlin’ Wolf Web site. Alumni will be able to purchase tickets for $5 through alumni affairs.
