While students can no longer choose to see Big Ben or bullfighting, seven other study abroad programs are still open, with financial assistance available.
The School of Mass Communication’s London program was cancelled shortly after the Spain program also got dropped, both due to low enrollment. But Debbie Danna, international education director, said people across the country are having trouble filling their short-term programs this summer.
Morgan Martin, English writing senior, attended the London program in 2005 and said it was one of the most successful and popular programs Loyola offered. Despite the London subway bombing during the trip, Martin said it was still worth it.
“It really required us to think outside the American box for once. It was probably one of the most eye-opening experiences I have ever had, and the teachers made the experience more enlightening and easier to comprehend and absorb,” Martin said. “I was actually really surprised to hear about the cancellations.”
Danna said the reason cancellations occur may stem from global economics.
“I think it has had a major impact on the programs. If you think about it, gas prices are up, causing airfare to be more expensive,” she said.
She added that with the American dollar losing its value globally, the exchange rate forces students to have 50 percent more of what the program costs to provide for personal needs -despite most programs’ paying for housing, course credits and attractions.
IE Counselors work with students to match programs with student interests and career goals. Financial aid options such as scholarships can also provide help, Danna said. Last year, $50,000 in grant aid was available for Louisiana residents alone and 10 students have applied this year.
India, the Bahamas and China joined the list of Loyola’s study abroad destinations in 2007, and this year the Europe and India programs are full.
Under construction is a new Web site that will make orientation materials, applications, and advising more streamline. Danna said the site will have program listings, essential forms and information that will be easily accessible. The tentative launch date is April 15.
