Loyola is a constant haven for music all around its historic campus. Take a peek at these rising stars within its own galaxy.
Chamber music takes on a new spin with the members of Loyola’s Contemporary String Ensemble. These musicians strive to take it to the next level, giving their performances an upbeat and entertaining 20th century feeling.
Twenty-three students comprise this ensemble of musicians. The repertoire includes violins, harps, violas, cellos, basses, flutes, oboes and clarinets. Joining the musicians are Louisiana State University doctoral student of violin, Raul Gomez; Meredith Arnold, A ‘08; Jonathan Reed, A ‘06; and Rebeca M. Garcia, A ‘06.
Andrea Gomez, music industry senior and senior cello player said, “We want to take chamber music to places that they are not usually heard— art shows, bars, take it to a relaxed informal setting.”
“What we are looking for is to also appeal to non-music students, who would normally not be attracted to attend a symphony show,” said Julia Howell, music composition senior and senior viola player.
The featured performer for their upcoming presentation Nov. 24 will be Ronaldo Cadeu, a composer and guitarist from Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
“It’s always preferable to feel like an invited guest at a party, not a musical voyeur eavesdropping on a private conversation,” Gomez said. “That’s how we want our audience to feel.
