The Brothers Duffourc took the loss of their childhood Lakeview home to Katrina as an opportunity not only to mourn, but to create.
Their original rock band, The Bally Who?, provides something unexpected and refreshing to their local demographic. It sounds like they could be stationed out of Brooklyn, Seattle or any city that fosters more bands like their style, but their local base gives us one more reason to love the New Orleans music scene.
Although their 2007 release “Keep on Dawn” is technically a post-Katrina record, lyrical evidence of that is only somewhat touched on, like with the appropriately titled “Crescent City Slump”, and does not overshadow other attitudes.
“Aqua Insomnia” begins boldly in sound and sentiment, and repeats a phrase that represents their musical and perhaps personal intentions: “Our love is free/it costs nothing.” Their love in the album emerges as a force to be reckoned with. The layered, progressive guitar and impassioned vocals demand attention, so don’t expect to tire of the album after a couple of songs.
The album’s diversity comes through with undeniably catchy songs like “For You Girl.” The delightful music is misleading, though, undercut by self-conscious lines such as: “Why am I afraid of this shadow in the shade of your halo?”
Brothers Jacques and Rene are commited to studio recording and editing to satisfaction that is manifested in the fully produced sound. At times, it seems awfully radio friendly for a humble, independent band.
What The Bally Who? boils down to is a fusion of reckless release unearthed by creative experimentation that could be enjoyed by a seasoned musician or your everyday music fan.
The Bally Who? is playing at the Dragon’s Den on Feb. 11.
