God’s Been Drinking, but you don’t have to for the show to be enjoyable – unless, of course, you want to.
God’s impaired judgment descends upon local comedians every Friday in the form of improvisational comedy at La Nuit Theater.
The performance is reflective of the theme, filled with incoherent storylines that leave the audience bewildered and tickled by the absurdity.
The modest club, exclusive to comedic entertainment, is on Soniat Street, where it meets student-friendly Freret.
Hurricane Katrina buried the theater’s predecessor (The Comedy Conservatory, founded in 2003) in floodwaters and in turn La Nuit was born in 2006.
It’s one of the early additions to Soniat that attempt to bring development and life to the area. Future provisions include a bar next to the theater, a bar inside the theater and a laundromat.
There’s something warm and intimate about the interior, coated with vibrant red paint and filled with tables and chairs placed closely together in front of the small stage where the scenes unfold on a weekly basis.
Every Friday and Saturday the show starts with veteran improv performers, followed by open mic sessions encouraging audience bravery.
Friday’s show, “God’s Been Drinking,” is comprised of four young and energetic comedians, including Nick Lopez, the theater’s general manager and Loyola ’05 drama alumnus. The troupe regales the audience with awkward sexual tension, and even more awkward and self-deprecating character sketches. The honesty and bravery of the performances that so often accompany stand-up are so endearing and respectable that laughter comes naturally.
The two-girl, two-guy group act as a tag team and intercept jokes of whatever comedians are on stage, stealing the spotlight until the tagged-out team reclaims it. The random, frantic stage swapping continues in one ridiculous and hilarious cycle.
Perhaps this local group, dedicated to Chicago-style improv, is starting a much-needed comedy revolution.
