Residence of Loyola’s Carrollton Hall were not happy, as they were evacuated after a dryer caught fire in the residence hall laundry room.
The incident began in the early morning of Sunday, Feb. 6 when towels containing cooking oils entered the dry cycle in a university dryer and started smoking. Over 300 residents were evacuated from the building’s suites and apartments, and the laundry facility’s dryers were out of order until Monday evening.
Many residents were awoken, while other then-intoxicated residents experienced a prolonged late night. “My RA banged on my door at 3:13 in the morning and I had to throw clothes on and get down the congested stairs. I didn’t go to bed til 5!” said Chelsea Blanco, a sophomore resident. (cannot find on find people)
The evacuation was the last thing Norah Sloss, sociology sophomore, wanted to end her night with. “I saw barefoot kids in 40-degree weather,” Sloss said.
Though students may have been bothered by the evacuation, Residential Life appreciates residents’ cooperation during the crisis, said Donna Adams, Carrollton Hall area director. The cooperation shown enabled the evacuation plan to work “exactly as planned.”
As the New Orleans Fire Department cleared the residence hall, students were moved to the St. Charles Room in the Danna Center.
The residents received a pizza and gelato party from La Divina Gelateria Wednesday, Feb. 9, as an apology for the evacuation, as the business was responsible for the incident.
