Suit against Loyola dismissed
The Orleans Civil District Court dismissed the Jody Roe v. Loyola University New Orleans case, which would have reimbursed fall 2005 tuition to those enrolled during that time. The plaintiff, Brian Branch, filed the class action lawsuit individually and on behalf of all Loyola students enrolled during Hurricane Katrina, when the university closed for the fall semester.
Branch, L’06, testified that he understood he could attend classes without charge at another school as long as he paid tuition and fees to Loyola. However, because “Loyola was unable to offer classes in the City of New Orleans,” he believed students should be refunded, said the summary judgment signed by Judge Porteous. The Court found Branch’s arguments unpersuasive and signed the judgment Nov. 26, 2007.
On-campus recycling begins
Loyola recycling is available again. Forty paper collection bins will soon be distributed across campus, but until then, two large green dumpsters on West Road by SP Paper Recyclers are available for office paper, newspapers and magazines. “Office paper” refers to white paper, junk mail, manila folders, colored office paper and envelopes without plastic or metal-coiled bindings. The newspaper and magazine bin can accept advertisements and paper bags as well. Loyola cannot recycle any thickly bound items, such as phone books, thick catalogues, textbooks or construction paper or anything with plastic, metal, wax or food debris.
