    A native’s guide: essential Carnival don’ts

    Don’t flash
Even though the atmosphere is festive and the liquor is flowing freely, try to keep some sense of decorum and pride in yourself. Male or female, it’s best to keep your private parts private.

    Don’t urinate in public
There are public toilets and churches everywhere with open doors to avoid this. There might be lines, but it’s better than being arrested for public indecency.

Don’t grab beads from the ground
Seriously, these things are dirt cheap, and you don’t want to touch the ground if you might be eating later. Unless it’s a particularly interesting strand, let it lie for the tourists.

Don’t leave your cell phone at home
It’s so easy to get separated from your friends, and then you might not be able to find your way home or call a cab.
Plus, how else will you leave hilarious and instantly regrettable drunk-dials in your crush’s voice mail?

    Don’t forget to be responsible
Make sure your wallets and keys are well guarded, that at least one person in your group stays sober and that you are prepared for any festivities. Mardi Gras is no excuse for not staying safe.
